President meets families of May 9 disaster

Published

on

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Monday assured the May 9 Foundation, a philanthropic organisation, of Government’s support for its public-spirited activities.

He gave that assurance when he met the families of some victims of the May 9, 2021 Stadium disaster at the Jubilee House Accra.

The group was led by the former Asante Kotoko Football Club Chairman, Herbert Mensah, founder of the May 9 Foundation.

The courtesy call on the President was part of activities to mark the 20th anniversary of the May 9, 2001 disaster.

On the fateful day, a stampede by fans of arch rival football clubs Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko during a crunch match, led to the tragic death of over 127 spectators at the Accra Sports Stadium.

President Akufo-Addo said government stood committed to offer the needed support to the Charity to enable it carry out its activities and campaign to ensure that the unfortunate incident did not reoccur.

“You will have the modest support that this administration will be able to give you. I can promise you that”.

Commiserating with the victims of the disaster, the President further reiterated government’s commitment, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and other relevant agencies to ensure that the disaster did repeat itself.

He commended the founding members of the Foundation for keeping alive the memory of the victims of the disaster and engaging in other philanthropic activities at ensuring that surviving family members of victims could look to the future with hope.

“I am happy that we have Ghanaians of your calibre who have made a decision about May 9th,”  he said, intrigued to learn that the Foundation had since expanded its reach beyond football to embrace a wider social space involving dislocation of people by floods and other disasters.

“this is a huge undertaking and you need a lot of courage and capacity to be able to carry it out well, ”he added.

On his part, Mr. Herbert Mensah reaffirmed the Foundation’s goal to offer the needed support to families of those who fell on the fateful day.

Mr Mensah praised the President for being the first to grant audience to the victims of the disaster since the incident, and expressed his gratitude for the support received over the years.

“In 20 years, it is gratifying to have a President who cares, “he said.

Argentina has beaten their South America rivals Brazil 1-0 to win the Copa America.

This victory would mean a lot for the Captain of Argentina Lionel Messi as a national team trophy has eluded him for years.

Messi at the junior level won an Olympic medal with Argentina at the junior level but had to wait for years to be able to win this major trophy.

A first half goal by Angel Di Maria which was scored in the 22nd Minute of play was enough to give Argentina that important win over Brazil.

Under 24 South Korea 3-1 Ghana -Ten-man Taegeuk Warriors too strong for Black Meteors.

Samuel Fabin’s side could not find a way past the Olympic-bound outfit in Seogwipo

Ghana U24 have suffered their third straight defeat of their Asian tour following a 3-1 loss to South Korea U24 in an international friendly fixture on Saturday.

Sang-Min Lee, Seung-Woo Lee, and Kyu-Seong Jo were on target for the Taegeuk Warriors, making little of Samuel Obeng Gyabaa’s consolation.

The match is the first of two games between the two sides.

It follows back-to-back 6-0 and 4-0 defeats to Japan’s U24 team in two earlier friendlies.

The games are part of Ghana’s preparations for the 2023 Africa Cup while both Japan and Korea use the matches as tests for the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games.

Having drawn blanks in their two previous fixtures, Meteors coach Samuel Paa Kwasi Fabin named a strong attacking line, putting faith in Genk winger Osman Bukari, Schalke 04 man Joselpho Barnes and Colchester United attacker Kwame Afriyie Adubofour Poku.

In the 18th minute, Sang-Min put the hosts in front, beating Ghana centre-back Frank Assinki to head home a cross from the right.

When Jin-Ya Kim was sent off for a reckless tackle in the 39th minute, it appeared as though Fabin’s outfit were going to capitalise on their numerical advantage to mount a fight-back.

The Meteors held their own for the remainder of the first half but saw their defence breached 13 minutes after the break as Seung-Woo reacted quickly to send a rebound into the net after his first effort fell back into play after crashing against the upright.

In the 66th minute, it was Kyu Seong’s turn to register his name on the score sheet, coolly taking a ball into the box on his chest with his back to goal and hitting a close range shot on the turn into the net.

Ghana finally found the back of the net 15 minutes prior to full-time, their first goal in three games when substitute Obeng shot past the Korea goalkeeper.

The two sides will meet again on Tuesday for the second game and Ghana’s last of their Asian tour.

The Meteors are set to watch the upcoming Olympics behind their TV sets after failing to secure qualification for the championship during the 2019 Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Egypt.

Copa America; Brazilian Supreme Court rules tournament can go on.

Copa America, which is set to start on Sunday, can go ahead in Brazil, the country’s Supreme Court has decided.

Judges held an emergency session on Thursday to consider requests to halt the competition because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was argued that hosting the tournament would endanger the lives of thousands of people.

The judges said that the Brazilian constitution did not give the court the power to block it.

But they said that state governors and city mayors should do more to ensure “appropriate health protocols” are respected.

They also expressed their dismay at President Jair Bolsonaro’s last-minute decision to stage the tournament, which will be held with no fans in stadiums.

Teams face mandatory testing every 48 hours. Their movements will be restricted and they will travel to host cities aboard chartered flights.

The tournament, postponed from 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, was originally to have been staged in Colombia and Argentina.

But Colombia was removed as co-host on 20 May because of domestic civil unrest, and Argentina was then stripped of its host status on 30 May, with organisers citing coronavirus concerns and the “present circumstances”.

Earlier this week, Brazil’s players criticised the idea to hold the tournament in their country.

Brazil has recorded more than 475,000 deaths attributed to coronavirus, the second highest number in the world after the US.
